CHAMPAGNE-Opening & Bottle Sizes (and Bible classes)

BORDEAUX 'LARGE FORMATS' Bordeaux has a less religious nomenclature for its large bottle sizes as befits its trading origins. In this it contrasts with Burgundy which, true to its Catholic heritage, has adopted the Champagne name styles for its larger sizes. Both Bordeaux and Burgundy sizes do not extend to the really large because of course they are bottled in that size from day one (rather than being decanted) and it has more to do with the ability to age gracefully - as the amount of air in the gap between the wine and cork is very limited in relation to the larger quantity of wine. So larger sizes are often longer lived than their smaller siblings...
